Awards program book slip: The ad that shoulda been

Absolutely Live, the production company headed by Danny Melnick, has been a faithful supporter of the JJA, advertising this year as it did last year in the program book for the Jazz Journalists Association’s Jazz Awards. Editorial error, however, led to the republication in 2010 of Absolutely Live’s 2009 ad — overlooking text that clearly was meant for events just a week away.

“Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz Festival,” the correct ad begins, “June 26 & 27th: Artists on 2 stages from Linda Oh to Gladys Knight from JD Allen to Ahmad Jamal

  • Sonny Rollins/Boston
  • Jarrett, Peacock, DeJohnette/NY
  • Danilo Perez: 21st Century Dizzy
  • “Louis” w/Wynton @ Apollo 8/30
  • Kind of Blue — the tour contines
  • Justin Bieber

“The Shape of Jazz” @ Zankel Hall — the series’ 8th season, 2010-11, is further featured in the ad, which mentions bookings of Regina Carter’s Reverse Thread, Chris Potter’s Underground, Bill Charlap & Renee Rosnes, Toshiko Akyoshi Celebration — All that jazz and so much more. . . . ” from Danny Melnick, www.absolutelylive.net, dmelnick@absolutelylive.net, 646 – 233- 2940.

The ad that did run in the program book, in both years, began, “50,000 Jazz Fans can’s be wrong.” Perhaps not, but program book editors can be. Apologies extended.
