Following up our successful and rewarding September 15 Jazz Matters panel discussion, we’re convening another group of critics to take stock of the finest jazz releases of the year to this point!
We’ll be gathering for an informal jukebox jury and panel discussion on Thursday, October 14, 6-8 p.m. at the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music performance space, 5th Floor, 55 West 13th Street in Manhattan.
Howard Mandel will moderate the event. David R. Adler will co-facilitate and share some music as well.
They’ll be joined by Nate Chinen, Jim Macnie and Josh Jackson, each of whom will bring several tracks for listening, blindfold-testing and freewheeling discussion. Bios below.

Howard Mandel (moderator) is an author, blogger, editor, senior contributor to Down Beat and other print publications, jazz commentator on NPR and in several films, adjunct professor at New York University and president of the Jazz Journalists Association.
Nate Chinen‘s jazz criticism turns up regularly in the New York Times and JazzTimes, and on his blog, The Gig. The Jazz Journalists Association has kindly recognized his work with the Helen Dance-Robert Palmer Award, as well as Best Book About Jazz, for Myself Among Others, coauthored with the impresario George Wein.
Jim Macnie is a writer who spent the last decade as managing editor of VH1.com. He has written about music for 30 years, and writes about jazz for Down Beat and The Village Voice. He blogs at Lament For a Straight Line.
Josh Jackson is the producer and host of The Checkout and Live at the Village Vanguard from WBGO and NPR Music. He still uses the word “record,” which makes him a spinster.
David R. Adler is a lecturer in jazz history at Queens College and editor of JJA News. His writings have appeared in JazzTimes, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Time Out-New York, Slate, The New Republic and many other publications.
