The JJA is producing a Jazz Media Summit at the Jazz Gallery (1160 Broadway, NYC) on Saturday, Jan 13, 2018, with participatory sessions entitled “Women in Jazz Journalism,” “Black Lives Matter and other Social Justice Issues in Jazz Journalism, and “Beyond the Immediate:
Expanding Your Media Outreach.” No admission charge will be required — all are welcome.
Scheduled proximately with the JazzTimes-Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Congress (Jan 11 and 12) and the eight-day Winter JazzFest, the JJA’s Jazz Media Summit will convene moderators Michelle Mercer (NPR, DownBeat’s “Hot Box”), Don Palmer (JJA board member, former program officer of the New York State Council on the Arts), and JJA president Howard Mandel (DownBeat, ArtsJournal.com/JazzBeyondJazz) to guide serious, 90-minute dives into pressing subjects from professional journalistic perspectives.
Among the confirmed participants in the three sessions are Lara Pelligrinelli, Jordannah Elizabeth, Natalie Weiner, Greg Tate, Nate Chinen, Russ Musto, and Neil Tesser are among confirmed participants in the three sessions, running from 10:30 am to noon, 12:30 pm to 2 pm, and 2:30 to 4 in the performance space of Manhattan’s most prominent presenter of emerging and international jazz artists. Indeed, Jazz Gallery artistic director Rio Sakaira was celebrated by the JJAin 2016 as a Jazz Hero for her ongoing creative and community-nurturing curation. The Jazz Gallery is situated on the fifth floor of 1160 Broadway, between 27 and 28th streets.
The half-hour interrums between the three sessions will be used, ideally, for furthering conversation about responses to the challenges for women, truth-tellers about matters involving race, and everyone trying to address a public with information, opinions and analysis related to jazz music and culture.
Donations will be accepted from attendees, but entrance to the Jazz Media Summit is free. Registrants will be entitled to a $15 discount on first-time membership in the JJA. Register here.
