Dan Morgenstern

Dan Morgenstern, dean of jazz journalists, turned 85 on October 24, 2014. The recipient of the JJA’s Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism Award as well as an NEA Jazz Master, multiple-Grammy winner for his liner notes,  director emeritus of the Institute for Jazz Studies at Rutgers U University, producer and frequent host of WBGO-FM’s “Jazz From the Archives,” long ago editor of  DownBeat and long-time friend of Louis Armstrong, Morgenstern is admired for his depth of knowledge and sensitivity to musicians as people and their creative activities throughout all spheres of the jazz world. Tom Reney, blogging for New England Public Radio, explains why. Happy birthday, Dan!
