Nov-Dec Members’ Updates: Y’all been good!

Matty Bannond reviewed the new release from the Wojtek Justyna TreeOH! in Jazz Journal, as well as the latest album by tenor saxophonist Denis Gäbel on the Free Jazz Collective website in November. His profile of baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian was published in the December issue of The New York City Jazz Record.

Ken Franckling reviewed and photographed saxophonist Charles McPherson’s thrice-delayed November 9 appearance with the Naples (FL) Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra as part of the quintet’s All That Jazz series for his Jazz Notes blog. He also covered singer Ronnie Leigh’s first concert performance at the Charlotte County Jazz Society.

Howard Mandel wrote a concluding chapter of “Louis Armstrong in Chicago” for the Jazz Institute of Chi’s JazzGram, reviewed five records from 40+ years ago (including Jimi Hendrix Experience at Los Angeles Forum — 5 stars!) and a new release by Trevor Dunn for DownBeat, posted to ArtsJournal.com/JazzBeyondJazz about having seen Hendrix in concert three times, and spoke on an on-line symposium organized by ecole fula flute, supporting local music and dance culture in Guinea.

Dee Dee McNeil published a feature article on former jazz tuba and euphonium player Brad Felt in the Historic Society of Michigan History magazine. She had the cover story (“John Stephens Tributes His Mentors”) at www.LAJazzScene.buzz, which also published her feature on jazz vocalist Carmen Lundy and another article on the first female director of Watts Towers art center, Rosie Lee Hooks.  Her “Person of Interest” article on Joe Lovano was published in the National Italian American Foundation’s Ambassador magazine.

Steve Monroe’s Jazz Avenues D.C. editions for Twitter and Facebook for October/November included promos for artists including the Michael Thomas Quintet, Benito Gonzalez, Bill Charlap, Lena Seikaly, Sarah Hughes, Charles McPherson, Carl Grubbs, Charles Covington Jr., and William Knowles and Mark Saltman, as well as reviews of the new album by No Base Trio and the Howard University Jazz Ensemble Fall Concert.

Danica Pantovic photographed three Serbian jazz festivals: Belgrade, Pancevacki, and Novosadski. They have all taken place between the end of October and mid-November for nearly 25 years.

Paul Rauch wrote previews for the 2022 Earshot Jazz Festival, as well as monthly live jazz previews, at his website. He also reviewed new releases, including Tito Carillo’s Urbanessence and Brandon Lee Cierly’s Camaraderie, and the album release show offered by trumpeter Thomas Marriott at Seattle’s Jazz Alley. He authored a feature for the music and culture website https://hardlyraining.com/ titled, “Grateful Dead Meetup at the Movies: Confessions of a Modern Jazz Journalist.”

Scott Thompson PR is working the new release by Grammy® nominee, Guggenheim Fellow and Steinway artist Elio Villafranca entitled Standing by the Crossroads with Cecile McLorin Salvant, Vincent Herring, Dayna Stephen, Freddie Hendrix, John Kreisberg and more. Thompson is also working the new Nestor Torres & Corey Allen release Dominican Suite

Michael J. West wrote a feature on addressing social equity in jazz education for the JazzTimes education guide, as well as a piece for the magazine’s “Chops” department on the Taubman method of piano. He covered the outbreak of a fire at D.C.’s Blues Alley for Washington City Paper.
