January is the cruelest month. Or is it February?

Dang snow, cold, darkness at 5 pm, RSV, flu, post-holiday doldrums, lapsed resolutions — members of the Jazz Journalists Association have driven into 2024 with characteristic energy and panache.

Our newest new member is Rusty Aceves of Martinez, CA — he’s the copywriter and editor of SFJazz.

We welcome the renewals (among several) of NYC’s own Dan “JazzManDan” Kassell, who is organizing a celebration of Duke Ellington’s piano music — often underrated — for the great man’s 125th anniversary of birth (contact him!), and Mirian Arbalejo, a writer of independence and indefatigable voice based in Madrid.

It’s not too early to leak the news that the JJA is in process of dropping an omnibus of jazz journalism, with almost 90 contributors providing coverage from the past 20 years. It’s really exciting but that’s all we’ll say about it for now, beyond that more bits of info will be forthcoming, and street date is projected as sometime in May.

The JJA has 14 “Seeing Jazz” Music Photography Master Classes with top images makers showing their works on YouTube, and more are scheduled. There are 25 episodes up of The Buzz: The Jazz Journalists Association Podcast, fascinating half-hours with luminaries from the jazz ecosystem. More programming’s being programmed.

But enough about us! Turn to page two for what individual members have been doing. And oh yeah, join the JJA! ——– —>>
