JJA members updates at year end

Matty Bannond reviewed new albums by Kaisa Maënsivu and Leo Genovese for the November issue of The New York City Jazz Record. For Jazz Journal, he wrote about the latest Anna Webber release as well as debut records from Arina Fujiwara and Maddie Vogler. He also reflected on a collaborative album from gabby fluke-mogul and Dave Rempis for Free Jazz Collective last month.

Jane Ira Bloom performed duo w/ bassist Mark Helias on Sunday, November 26 at the Soapbox Gallery, 636 Dean St, Brooklyn, in celebration of their three digital releases Some Kind of Tomorrow, See Our Way, & 2.3.23 Bloom/ Helias/ Previte. 

Debbie Burke just published volume three of her jazz interview series Tasty Jazz Jams for Our Times (TM) and it made #1 in Amazon rankings in three categories: Brass Instrument Music, Biographies of Jazz Musicians, AND Music Essays! With a foreword by Benny Golson and personal interviews with 37 jazz artists including Sonny Rollins, Betty Bryant and Lisa Marie Simmons, the book continues in Debbie Burke’s tradition of jazz storytelling through musicians’ experiences and insights. Sid Gribetz produced a five-hour radio broadcast celebrating the career of Ernie Henry, on WKCR-FM New York City.

Doug Hall has recently written a long-form “artist of the month” profile on legendary swing bandleader Count Basie for WICN PR in Worcester, Ma. He also now has a regular podcast program recorded at Belmont Media Center, “Talk About Jazz with Doug Hall” and recently interviewed Pavle Zvekic, a Serbian jazz pianist and graduate of Berklee College of Music.

Howard Mandel emceed a celebration at the Jazz Showcase of the life of Jim deJong, a profound Chicago Jazz Hero; reviewed drummer Reggie Quinerly’s The Thousandth Scholar for DownBeat; posted an interview with the late saxophonist Mars Williams on Substack, and moderated an upcoming episode of The Buzz with Paul de Barros, Monika Herzig and John Szwed re jazz journalism/jazz education.

Virgil Mihaiu had the joy of being awarded Book of the Year 2022 Prize by the Romanian Writers’ Union in Cluj (the capital of the Romanian province of Transylvania) for Jazz Contextele mele (“My Jazz Contexts”).

Dan Ouellette is in the midst of finishing the final two archival conversations (Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden) of his 25-chapter book The Landfill Chronicles that has been published the past three years on the online Medium platform. The entire book will be published by Cymbal Press early next year. He also profiled Allison Miller for the November column of “Jazz & Beyond Intel,” and wrote an Indie feature for the January issue of DownBeat on drummer/producer Ross Pederson.

Danica Pantovic has attended and photographed for JJA the 42nd edition of Tampere Jazz Happening in Finland.

Rob Shepherd wrote liner notes for George Burton’s holiday album, The Yule Log. For PostGenre, Rob interviewed Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on his leader debut, Susan Alcorn on merging avant-garde jazz and nueva canción, Sam Newsome on prepared saxophone, and Sarah Belle Reid on the intersection of classical music, improvisation, and electronics.
