ASCAP seeks Deems Taylor Award submissions

Submissions are sought  for the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for non-fiction prose about music and/or its creators, published in English in the United States in calendar year 2010. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2011.

Biographical, critical, reportorial or historical works, reprints or translations of works that were previously published outside the United States now being published in the United States for the first time, program notes, recording liner notes and on-line publications are all eligible for the Awards, some categories of which have cash prizes for winners. There is no submission fee for the Awards, established in 1967 to memorialize Deems Taylor, a critic and commentator as well as composer who was President of ASCAP for six years, and died in 1966.

Numerous Jazz Journalists Association members and former members have won Deems Taylor Awards, including Whitney Balliet, Francis Davis, Will Friedwald, Jon Garelick, Gary Giddins, David Hajdu, Geoffrey Himes, Ashley Kahn, Gene Lees, John McDonough, Howard Mandel, Dan Morgenstern, Ted Panken, Doug Ramsey, David Ritz, Gene Santoro, Richard Sudhalter, Stephanie Stein-Crease, Mark Stryker, Neil Tesser and Josef Woodard.
