Bridget Arnwine has taken on a new role with examiner.com. In addition to her responsibilities as the DC Jazz Music Examiner she will also serve as the National Jazz Artist Examiner. She is scheduled to interview several of this year’s DC Jazz Festival performers including Cyrus Chestnut, Antonio Hart, Claudia Acuña, Roy Hargrove, and the Heath Brothers.
Jane Ira Bloom performs a special “Only Ballads” set with bassist Dean Johnson and pianist Dominic Fallacaro at the University of the Streets, 130 East 7th St, NYC on Saturday, June 11 at 8:00pm.
Larry Blumenfeld leads “Tuning into Treme”, a series of 90-minute conversations on Tuesday evenings in June at The National Jazz Museum In Harlem. Drawing on his extensive reporting for The Wall Street Journal, Village Voice, and other publications, Blumenfeld will use the second season of the popular HBO series “Treme,” which is named for a historic New Orleans neighborhood, to frame a wide-ranging consideration of jazz culture in that city and its role in recovery.
Skip Bolen just updated his website to include many new black & white images from this year’s 2011 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Check back often as new jazz- and music-related photos are always being added.
Shaun Brady wrote the liner notes for Adam Rudolph’s new Moving Pictures CD, Both/And. He also spoke with both Joe Lovano and Chris Potter about their new commissioned pieces for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, based on the Ellsworth Kelly painting Seine.
Yvonne Ervin has settled in Tucson, Arizona where she recently re-joined the board of the Tucson Jazz Society. Still a regular contributor to Hot House, her most recent features were on Kenny Barron and Mike Melvoin. She will return to NYC in June to help produce the JJA’s Jazz Awards.
Patrick Hinely, having been a faithful reader of CADENCE magazine for more than 20 years but never published therein, finally was, in the most recent issue, which included excerpts from his letter lamenting its ceasing publication at year’s end.
Antje Huebner at hubtone PR has promoted the performances of the Riga Ritmi Festival All Stars from Latvia, with special guests Chris Potter and Brian Lynch, at the Blue Note jazz club in mid May. Antje also started a campaign for the Rigas Ritmi Festival, an annual jazz festival in Riga, Latvia. She will soon begin promoting the new Randy Brecker release with the Danish Radio Big Band on Half Note Records.
Sanford Josephson, author of Jazz Notes: Interviews Across the Generations (Praeger/ABC-Clio), will be one of the participating authors at BooksNJ 2011 being held from 1-5 p.m., June 12 at the Paramus Public Library in Paramus, NJ. He will be discussing his book in a 3:30 p.m. panel called “The Art of the Interview.”
Wolfram Knauer will organize the 12th Darmstadt Jazzforum in Darmstadt Germany on the subject “Jazz. Schule. Medien” (Jazz, School, Media), Sept. 28 through Oct. 1, 2011. Part of the conference will focus on how to use jazz in public schools and colleges. Other topics will be the state of jazz criticism in German-speaking countries as well as methods for musicians to reach a larger audience without having to compromise too much. There will be a workshop for teachers as well as an online competition for (German-speaking) journalists who write for daily newspapers or online services.
Eugene Marlow will release A Fresh Take (MEII Enterprises), his 7th album in as many years, in mid-June. MEII Enterprises is Marlow’s indie label. A Fresh Take is a collection of nine tracks performed by Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble, a quintet devoted to the performance of original and Hebraic melodies in various jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and neo-classical styles—a reflection of the mixing of cultures that has increasingly evolved in the world of music in recent decades.
Matt Marshall wrote a three-part review of the Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland 2011 for All About Jazz.
Tony Mottola and Mitchell Seidel, along with co-editor/art director Linda Lobdell, received a First Place 2010 Excellence in Journalism Award from the New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for Jersey Jazz magazine. The monthly journal of the New Jersey Jazz Society is in its thirty-ninth year of publication. The NJCSPJ award noted: “The answer to a jazz fan’s dream. Jersey Jazz is packed with information, reviews, performance schedules, events and interviews. The layout is clean with good typography. An effective black and white publication.”
Ted Panken has launched a music blog titled “Today Is The Question.”
Doug Ramsey wrote the essay for Mosaic’s seven-CD box, The Complete Atlantic Studio Recordings of the Modern Jazz Quartet 1956-1964. He has an article about the late Joe Morello in the June issue of Drum! Magazine. His Rifftides the 2010 winner of the JJA Blog of the Year award., is nominated again for 2011.
Lars Westin is again (for the 12th year) hosting a series of weekly jazz programmes, “Summertime”, on the Swedish Radio. Also continues throughut the year with the monthly show “P2 Arkiv Jazz,” presenting Swedish Radio material of historical significance (music recordings and taped interviews), and contributes articles and reviews to jazz mag Orkester Journalen and other publications.
Kazue Yokoi‘s new book, Avant-Garde Jazz: Yoroppa Furi No Kiseki (Avant-Garde Jazz: The Footsteps of European Free Improvisation), was released by Publisher Michitani, Tokyo Japan on May 20, 2011. Her photo exhibition “Portraits of Innvovators” is held at Uplink Gallery in Tokyo from May 24 to June 6, 2011.
