Here are the most recent publications and other work reported by the extremely active members of the Jazz Journalists Association. We never sleep!
David R. Adler wrote feature articles on Donny McCaslin and Craig Taborn for JazzTimes, as well as liner notes for Mike Moreno’s First In Mind (Criss Cross). He also reviewed Angelica Sanchez’s A Little House (Clean Feed) and Ben Allison’s Action-Refraction (Palmetto) for Stereophile magazine.
Jane Ira Bloom performs at the River to River Festival’s “Express Your Inner Feiffer Dancer” at the Winter Garden World Financial Center, 220 Vesey St in NYC on Sun, July 10, 2 – 3pm. A live dance-in inspired by The Dancer Films featuring cartoonist Jules Feiffer creating new cartoons joined by dancer Andrea Weber and Bloom & ensemble w/ Marty Ehrlich (bass clarinet & flute), Dean Johnson (bass), James Shipp (vibes), Aaron Shafer-Haiss (percussion). Bloom also appears with Chinese pipa artist Min Xiao-Fen and Korean komungo player Jin Hi Kim at the Stone, located at the corner of Avenue C and 2nd St in NYC on Thursday, July 21 at 8:00pm.
Alex Dutilh did his “Open Jazz” radio broadcast on France Musique live from Montreal from Monday, June 27 to Friday, July 1. Each day presented live music and interviews as the highlights of the night before: Diana Krall, Brad Mehldau, Marc Ribot, Fly, Dave Holland, Stéphane Belmondo, Gretchen Parlato, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Anouar Brahem, Terez Montcalm and others can be heard online till the end of July. His “Special Nights” (a 6-hour program including a long interview) about John Zorn and Wynton Marsalis are also still available.
David Hajdu‘s biography of Billy Strayhorn, “Lush Life,” was named one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time in June by the editors of the New York Times Magazine.
James Hale is giving a lecture at the Siena Jazz Workshop. While there, he’ll also be writing a feature on the workshp and doing a profile of Italian pianist Franco D’Andrea, both for DownBeat.
Patrick Hinely‘s portrait of Roswell Rudd graces the front cover of Rudd’s new CD on Sunnyside, The Incredible Honk. His photographs of Terry Vosbein and the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra are on the front and inside of their new album Fleet Street on Max Frank Music.
Daniel Smith‘s latest album on the Summit label, Bassoon Goes Latin Jazz!, hit the Jazz World Music charts immediately upon its release, and is still high up on the charts for 17 weeks to date. Featured along with Smith’s quartet of Daniel Kelly (piano), Michael O’Brien (bass), and Vincent Ector (drums) are special guest artists Roswell Rudd on trombone, Sandro Albert on guitar, and Neil Clarke on Latin percussion. The album contains 12 tracks with selections ranging from Lee Morgan to Herbie Hancock and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Plans are underway to feature the music from this album at live performances in the USA and Europe.
Michael J. West covered the DC Jazz Festival for Washington City Paper, and will cover the Copenhagen Jazz Festival for JazzTimes. He has also written a feature on jazz musicians and hearing loss for the JazzTimes Education Guide.
