Here are the most recent publications and other work reported by the extremely active members of the Jazz Journalists Association. We never sleep!
Lena Adasheva published an article on jazz photography together with her photos in Russia’s most important photography magazine, Foto&Video. She also wrote an article for Russian jazz blog Jazz.Ru on John Abbott’s photographs from the book Saxophone Colossus: A Portrait of Sonny Rollins. In addition, Lena’s photographs are featured on Matthew Shipp and Sabir Mateen’s live recording, SaMa live in Moscow. Currently Lena is participating in the JJA’s eyeJAZZ Training Program.
Bridget Arnwine interviewed Orrin Evans, Sachal Vasandani, Earl Klugh, and Gretchen Parlato (currently transcribing) for DC’s Examiner.com. The Orrin Evans interview was part of an article about the inaugural concert for the Ertëgun Jazz Series- a six concert series born of a partnership between the Embassy of Turkey, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Boeing Company. She is also working on completing several CD reviews for allaboutjazz.com and Examiner.com.
Jane Ira Bloom performs in New York City in support of her new Wingwalker CD at University of the Streets on Saturday April 16 and Cornelia Street Café on Sunday May 22. She will be joined by long-time bandmates drummer Bobby Previte, and bassists Mark Helias and Dean Johnson.
Skip Bolen is currently updating his website to include many new photos from the 2010 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival just in time for the upcoming 2011 JazzFest, which kicks off at the end of April. Additionally, he is adding many new black & white jazz images under his “Favorite Musicians” section.
Shaun Brady wrote features on Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band for JazzTimes, Terell Stafford for DownBeat, and Donny McCaslin and Keiko Matsui for Jazziz. He talked with present and former members of Tindersticks about their scores for the films of Claire Denis for Cowbell magazine. Somehow he also found time to delight in the strange spectacle of watching John Zorn perform on a historic church pipe organ – twice.
Noal Cohen co-authored with saxophonist Chris Byars an article, “Lucky Thompson In Paris: The 1961 Candid Records Session,” that was published in Current Research In Jazz. The discography and both appendices from his book Gigi Gryce: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce, coauthored with Michael Fitzgerald and published in 2002, have been expanded and updated and are now available online.
R.J. DeLuke wrote features on Al DiMeola and Hiromi for the Albany Times Union newspaper, and on David Caceres and Tom Moon for AllAboutJazz.com, with more for both entities in the works. He also began participation in the JJA’s eyeJazz training program .
Thomas Jacobsen’s new book, Traditional New Orleans Jazz: Conversations with the Men Who Make the Music, was officially released on March 25. On that day he appeared at the 25th annual Tennessee Williams New Orleans Literary Festival on a panel featuring new books on jazz in New Orleans, chaired by author/musician Tom Sancton. The March issue of The Clarinet magazine included his review of Evan Christopher’s Finesse CD as well as a review article of the new Kenny Davern biography by Edward Meyer. Jacobsen also reviewed the late Herman Leonard’s handsome volume, JAZZ, in the March issue of Offbeat magazine.
Sanford Josephson has been invited to participate in BooksNJ – 2011, a book festival being held June 12 at the Paramus, NJ, Public Library. He will be discussing his book, Jazz Notes: Interviews Across the Generations (Praeger/ABC-Clio).
Howard Mandel showed classic Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker film clips to students at the University of Jordan, while talking to them about jazz and blues. He met Jordanian musicians and heard a live set during a 10-day visit – just before kicking off the JJA’s eyeJAZZ training sessions and concretizing plans for the 15th annual JJA Jazz Awards.
Eugene Marlow published an article on APAP/NYC in the March 2011 issue of JazzEd magazine. The piece features a substantial description of the JJA’s activities during the recent APAP Annual Conference. Marlow has previously published an article on “Transcribing Charts for Big Band” and the Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives series at Baruch College (that he curates) for JazzEd. In fall 2011 he will be leading an honors seminar at Baruch College entitled “Jazz: Cultural Touchstone of the 20th Century.”
Wilbert Sostre covered the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest press conference for Jazz Times and JJA News; his articles will appear in those publications shortly. In addition he was interviewed on Puerto Rico’s Jazz Radio Vid 90.3 about his research (to be featured in a book) on the history of jazz in Puerto Rico.
Carol Sudhalter saw the publication in March of The Secret of Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence (Roberto Corazzi and Giuseppe Conti, Pontecorboli, Florence), a book she translated in 2010. The official release of her new CD as special guest on Geco Records, Carmelo and Carol Remember: Great Film Music of the Sixties, was in mid-March in Saluzzo, Italy. Upcoming for Carol are at Skipper’s and Private Place Lounge, NJ with Madame Pat Tandy’s all-women quintet, and Carol’s ‘Swinging Sisters’ little big band at 345 Park Ave. (See Carol’s blog for dates.)
