January is the cruelest month. Or is it February?

Steve Braunginn‘s podcast Strictly Jazz Sounds released the 16th episode of Season 1, featuring Terri Lyne Carrington. This closed a series of five women in jazz. Other artists include: Brandee Younger, Roxy Coss, Miki Yamanaka and Julieta Eugenio. 

Sascha Feinstein announces the Winter 2023 issue of Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz & Literature, which features an interview with jazz radio legend Dick Golden, one of Tony Bennett’s oldest and closest friends. Golden also writes on the cover art: Bennett’s portrait of Duke Ellington. Ira Sadoff contributes a Clifford Brown poem and an essay on Charles Simic. Other featured writers include Betsy Sholl, Bruce Bond, Robert Hahn, Bill Tremblay, and Michael Waters.

C. Andrew Hovan covered the Bill Charlap trio at Cleveland’s Treelawn Concert Hall in November for All About Jazz.  He has also recently penned liner notes for upcoming SteepleChase releases from Andy Laverne and Dave Pietro.  Furthermore, Hovan is writing notes for a One For All album with George Coleman, to be released in March of 2024.  Hovan’s Generations Quartet returned to Pittsburgh’s Con Alma in November and his Organic Trio recently made their debut at GRNoir in Grand Rapids.

Sanford Josephson interviewed Aida Brandes-Hargrove, alto saxophonist Bruce Williams, and baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall in the January issue of Jersey Jazz, about the upcoming January 18 performance of the Roy Hargrove Big Band at the South Orange (NJ) Performing Arts Center. His Rising Star feature is on vocalist Tyreek McDole, winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition.

Howard Mandel wrote an Invisible Jukebox feature on Kahil El’Zabar, then liner notes for Open Me, his album on SpiritMuse Records celebrating 50 years of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble; was interviewed for a film about Freddie Hubbard; reviewed Amanda Gardier’s Auteur: Music Inspired by the Films of Wes Anderson; completed his Francis Davis Jazz Critics Ballot and posted it at Members.JazzJournalists.org; conferred with George Varga for his article on classical venues’ jazz series; did a lot of work on several JJA projects, wrote more of his non-jazz fiction project, and posted Lona Foote’s photos of the late Phill Niblock and late Jay Clayton at his Substack Mandel’s Media Diet.

Scott Thompson is working the Kirk Edwards release Shout, featuring Donald Vega, as well as the new release by guitarist Greg Chako, Life After 40. Thompson is also onboard with guitarist Sandro Norton with Gary Burton. New Zealand’s Dan Piclkering is also on the roster with Small Worlds Vol. 2 on Rattle Records.

Michael J. West wrote a prevew of Brian and Jessica Settles’ Martin Luther King Celebration at Blues Alley for the Washington Post. He also covered the 25th anniversary of the Michael Thomas Quintet in his “Swing Beat” column for Washington City Paper.
