Members Updates — late fall/early winter edition:

Steve Braunginn released two new shows: Episode 22 – Yuhan Su: The Imagination is in the Music and Episode 23-Kris Davis: Creative Processes and Mentorship in Jazz. Steve interviewed Richie Goods and Chien Chien Lu in his home studio prior to their show in Columbus, OH. The podcast featuring both of these outstanding musicians is forthcoming. Finally, Episode 24-Walter Smith III: Jazz Educator and Saxophone Virtuoso was released later in the month.

Noal Cohen published “Terry Gibbs Helped Establish the Gold Standard for Modern Jazz Vibraphonists” in Jersey Jazz, Vol. 52, Issue 09, October 2024, p. 34-38.

Doug Hall has recently posted a jazz profile of Illinois Jacquet for WICN PR radio. He also continues his podcast series for AllAllaboutjazz.com’s Talk About Jazz with Berklee graduate, Spanish jazz violinist and composer Ángela Varo.

Patrick Hinely’s paean to Sonny Rollins is in the latest quarterly issue of CADENCE, anchoring an illustrated narrative of his first festival forays outside the USA, to Canada and Poland, now  40+ years ago. More recently, Hinely photographed Royce Campbell with the Vosbein-McGee Big Band for a forthcoming recording.

David Keller is happy to say that his article, “Sweethearts of Jazz: The Women of Seattle’s Black Musicians Union” is included in JJA’s The Jazz Omnibus: 21st-Century Photos and Writings. Of late he has also been working with the WSU Press editor Linda Bathgate on a revised edition of THE BLUE NOTE Seattle’s Black Musicians’ Union A Pictorial History. THE BLUE NOTE is now available from the WSU Press and Amazon.

Howard Mandel reviewed Like A Tree It Grows (Soulspazm) by Igmar Thomas’ Revive Big Band for DownBeat, posted a conversation with Monterey Jazz Festival artistic director Darrin Atwater, a podcast with Ann Tappan, a long, unvarnished interview with Roy Haynes on his Substack Mandel’s Media Diet, was interviewed with Andy Gilbert and Terri Hinte about The Jazz Omnibus by Chuy Valera (KSCM) and hosted a JJA party at Chicago’s Jazz Showcase where locally-based Omnibus contributors Hrayr Attarian, Jeff Cebulski, Lauren Deutsch, Corey Hall, Michael Jackson, Marc PoKempner, Neil Tesser, Deanna Witkowski read and schmoozed (Deanna played!).

Eugene Marlow, Ph.D.,is In the process of editing 32 musician, jazz festival directors, and cultural historian interviews conducted in the last 13 months for a feature-length documentary on “Jazz in Arabic Culture.” It is due for release on April 30, 2025: International Jazz Day.

Dee Dee McNeil  had work published in three different books in October. The first was The Jazz Omnibus, a compilation of articles written by 90 international JJA jazz journalists. The second and third were Chicken Soup for the Soul books: Miracles, Angels & Messages from Heaven and Tales of Christmas.  She contributed to Contemporary Fusion Review magazine, Musical Memoirs jazz blog, Making A Scene magazine and LAJazzScene.buzz.

J.G. Wirt photographed the Fall Elk Grove Jazz Festival for the Oct. 4 Elk Grove (CA) Citizen weekly. It featured the saxophonist Garrett Perkins’ Project, saxophonist/flutist Paula Atherton, trumpeter Lin Roundtree and bassist Julian Vaughn.
