Mirian Arbalejo just wrote an essay about “Music Criticism in the XXI Century”. Her monograph on “Leonard Bernstein and Jazz” keeps going! She’s also celebrating this special centennial in her city, Madrid, with the Spanish National Orchestra (OCNE) and maestro Juanjo Mena. Mirian has covered Kamasi Washington’s Heaven and Earth Tour. Her site is committed to the “We Have Voice” Code Of Conduct.

Monifa Brown continues weekly broadcast of “Saturday Afternoon Jazz” (2-6pm ET weekly) at WBGO for the 22nd consecutive year. Highlighting the continuum of the music, Brown showcases the living legends and those who have passed as well as the up-and-coming artists upholding the tradition and  pushing  it forward. James Hale wrote about the jazz program at Texas Christian University for DownBeat and examined the musical collaboration of Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Dave Alvin for SoundStageXperience.com.

Doug Hall just returned from the Montreal Jazz Festival where he enjoyed performances by a variety of musicians including the John Medeski & Marc Ribot Trio, Ry Cooder, Lucioles(jazz interpretation of iconic P. Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” release), Kamasi Washington and Terence Blanchard. He says,  “please look for my review soon at ZEALnyc.com.” He  also recently attended a CD release performance of “One Day It Will” from the Danny Green Trio in Cambridge, MA and published a review at allaboutjazz.com.

Sheila Jordan conducted a two-week Jazz in July workshop at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and will spend five days at the end of July doing concerts and workshops in Argentina.


Sanford Josephson was interviewed on June 28 by pianist Eric Mintel for his Princeton Community Television show, “Talking Jazz”.  He talked about his book, Jeru’s Journey: The Life and Music of Gerry Mulligan, as well as other related subjects. The segment will air sometime in the fall.


Howard Mandel wrote about Kenny Barron’s quintet album and a reissue of Oscar Peterson Plays for DownBeat, about the preview of the newly discovered Coltrane album at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio and the new ownership of Delmark Records for The Wire, and produced the 22nd annual JJA Jazz Awards party at the New School.


Allen Morrison recently presented three 2018 JJA Jazz Awards – best composer, arranger and large ensemble – to Maria Schneider at Birdland before her orchestra’s show there. In May, he gave jazz history presentations for a week aboard the Queen Mary 2. His historical column on reissues by Beaver Harris/Don Pullen, Don Cherry, Mike Westbrook and Steve Lacy will be in the September issue of DownBeat.


Deanna Witkowski just returned from an eight-week residency in Bahia, Brazil as a Sacatar Institute Fellow. Her ongoing research exploring Afro-Brazilian invocations of Nossa Senhora (“Our Lady”) will culminate in a new composition and recording, the Nossa Senhora Suite. Witkowski’s article, “Making Hearts and Voices Sing: Creating Jazz Hymns” will be published in the September issue of  DownBeat. She also has a new book contract with Liturgical Press for a forthcoming biography of Mary Lou Williams to be published in 2019.
