Larry Appelbaum recently gave talks on jazz and cultural change at the Kiev International Jazz Festival. His “Before & After” columns with Helen Merrill, Terri Lyne Carrington and Marc Cary appeared in JazzTimes. In addition, his review and photos of the Vancouver Jazz Festival were published in Jazz.ru magazine, and his webcast interviews with Dave Brubeck, Jim Hall, Uri Caine, Henry Butler, Dafnis Prieto and Guillermo Klein are now on the Library of Congress website, as well as on YouTube.
Brett Delmage, publisher of OttawaJazzScene.ca, interviewed JJA member Peter Hum about the release of his first CD, A Boy’s Journey. Peter responds to questions about the relationship between his work as a jazz journalist and as a musician. The interview can be found here.
George Grella is now a contributor to the second edition of the Grove Dictionary of American Music, which will be published in 2011. He will be writing entries on several young composers, some performing ensembles and figures such as George Steel and William Christie.
James Hale contributed to a CBC Radio documentary about pianist Vince Guaraldi and the creation of the Peanuts Christmas TV special. The documentary’s narrator is drummer Jerry Granelli, the sole remaining member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
Thomas Jacobsen reviewed the latest CDs by Ken Peplowski (Noir Blue) and Anat Cohen (Clarinetwork: Live at the Village Vanguard) in the December 2010 issue of The Clarinet magazine. He also reviewed the new book by James K. Williams, Jimmie Noone, Jazz Clarinet Pioneer (2010), on his website, www.neworleansnotes.com.
Fran Kaufman is featured in a one-person exhibition of her photographs of jazz musicians, onstage and off. It opens at the Oregon Jewish Museum in Portland, Oregon on Thursday, February 3, and runs through May 1. The exhibit will be mounted to coincide with the theme of this year’s Portland Jazz Festival, “Bridges and Boundaries: Jewish and African Americans Playing Jazz Together.” Kaufman and her work will be the subject of the festival’s Jazz Conversation on Sunday, February 20 at 1 p.m.
Bob Protzman was all over Christmas (a.k.a. the holidays) this year with a piece on 20 of his favorite jazz Christmas recordings for the December Great Lakes Life magazine (Northwest Pennsylvania, Southwest New York, Northeast Ohio and Ontario, Canada), and four — count ’em — four three-hour shows (December 3, 10, 17 & 24) composed entirely of Christmas jazz on JAZZ-FM from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania . The program is “Everything Jazz,” 3-6 p.m. (EST) Fridays and streams at www.erieradio.com.
Antonio Terzo, Editor-in-Chief of jazzColours monthly e-magazine, is proud to announce that the publication is now entering its fourth year of publication. The January issue features pianist Craig Taborn, accordionist Giuliana Soscia and drummer Bruno Tocanne, among others.
Bert Vuijsje wrote the introductory article on “Jazz in The Netherlands” for the English-language magazine of the Dutch Jazz & World Meeting 2010, which took place in Amsterdam from December 1-3, 2010 (organized by Music Centre The Netherlands).
