Lauren Deutsch and Jonathan Woods’ Tangible Sound: A Visual Celebration of Creative Improvised Music is an immersive, sensory multimedia exhibition featuring visual compositions of music by Roscoe Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, Nicole Mitchell, Sun Ra and others, with live music by Tatsu Aoki and Edward Wilkerson, presented by Asian Improv Arts Midwest on Thursday and Friday May 9 and 10, 2024 at 4875 N. Elston Ave, Chicago. Exhibition hours are 5:00-8:30 pm. You can view a trailer of the project here.

Howard Mandel reviewed Etienne Charles’ Creole Orchestra for DownBeat, posted about the JJA’s Jazz Hero campaign at Mandel’s Media Diet ,hosted photographer Efrain Ribeiro, the JJA’s 2024 Baltimore Jazz Hero, for a session of Seeing Jazz (on YouTube) and created Spotify playlists of 2024 Musician of the Year and Record of the Year nominees.

Lawrence Peryer’s Spotlight On has a May lineup featuring Markus Reuter, Kavita Shah, Francesco Crosara and James Falzone. Episode 200, with a special mystery guest, airs May 9.

Scott Thompson PR is working two separate trio releases, the Gabrille Stravelli Trio’s Beautiful Moons Ago and the Greg Chako Trio’s Standard Roots. Ms. Stravelli was featured on Gail Boyd’s Alternative Venues for Jazz and is at Birdland every Saturday in June.

Wilbert Sostre Maldonado joined in the celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day on April 26 at Casa Histórica de la Música Cayeyana, Cayey, Puerto Rico. He took part in a conversation about jazz in Puerto Rico and the English edition of Wilbert ‘s book Boricua Jazz: Puerto Rico Jazz History.

Michael J. West wrote obituaries for Tootie Heath (DownBeat) and Michael Cuscuna (WRTI). He received the Berger-Carter-Berger Research Fellowship from Rutgers University’s Institute for Jazz Studies.
