The ninth edition of the Torino Jazz Festival was held from June 19 to 27 of June in three
main venues in the city’s historical district. Although still very, this fest attained international recognition and prestige early, with performances in the previous years by artists such as McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Archie Shepp, Diane Schurr, Ron Carter, Carla Bley and Billy Cobham representing a long list.
Due to the pandemic situation, from the beginning of last year most events here as elsewhere were suspended, but thanks to the passion for the music and professionality of artistic directors Giorgio Li Calzi and Diego Borotti, press and media coordinators Luiza Cicero and Maurizio Quattrini and indeed all the staff members, the festival was back in-person, with some 150 esteemed Italian and internationally-based musicians featured in nine days of original productions.
The lineup comprised:
- Gianluca Petrella Cosmic Renaissance,
- Erios Junior Jazz Orchestra featuring Joan Chamorro,
- Luigi Martinale Quartet with guest Stefano ‘Cocco’ Cantini + Classwing Ensemble + Pino Ninfa,
- Gianluigi Trovesi,
- Filarmonica Trt,
- Fabrizio Bosso ‘Berg Heim: a small Magic Mountain,’
- Robert Henke ‘Cbm 8032 AV,’
- Uri Caine,
- Furio Di Castri,
- Andy Sheppard ‘Five Visions’,
- Emanuele Cisi and Francesca Corrias ‘No Eyes,’
- Biréli Lagrène & Charlier
- Sourisse Multiquarium Big Band ‘Remember Jaco Pastorius,’
- Donny McCaslin Quartet with guest Gail Ann Dorsey, ‘Bowie’s Blackstar’,
- Nate Wood ‘fOUR,’
- Arto Lindsay and Band,
- Zig Zag Power Trio Ft. Vernon Reid, Will Calhoun & Melvin Gibbs,
- Roberto Dani, solo,
- Salif Keita ‘Un Autre Blanc,’
- Korabeat.
Nothing gave evidence to the fest’s success more than its audience. Most of the concerts were sold out days in advance.
The Torino Jazz Festival 2021 will have a second part called JAZZ CL (H) UB September 27 to 3 October 2021, in venues spread all over the city. Fans here are looking forward to another weeks of great music.
