August Members’ updates: Jazz that is. . .

Matty Bannond had five album reviews published by Jazz Journal and Free Jazz Collective during July. This included responses to new releases from Antonio Farao, Ellie Lee and Filip Bukrshliev. Matty also interviewed drummer Marcus Gilmore for the July issue of The New York City Jazz Record. He is reporting on Ambrose Akinmusire’s concert in Cologne, Germany, next month.

Philip Booth presented a paper on “The Sounds of Hemingway’s France and Spain: Jazz and Other Music in Paris and the Basque Country” at the 20th Biennial Hemingway Conference in San Sebastian and Bilbao, Spain in July. He reviewed recordings by Milton Suggs, Scott LaFaro and Willie Morris for Jazziz, and reviewed Glenn Kenny’s book The World is Yours: The Story of ‘Scarface’ for The Washington Post.

John Chacona interviewed Alyssa Allgood, Lucas Apostoleris, Aaron Irwin and David Janeway for previews of their concerts at let’s call this, his hyperlocal blog documenting the northeast Ohio scene. For All About Jazz he published reviews of cuts from recordings by John Escreet, Brian Landrus, electro-acoustic duo Farahser and Ken Peplowski. Mostly, though, he’s packing 11,000 CDs, 2,000 cassettes and what’s left of a 1,500-item record collection post-flood for an impending move in August.

Doug Hall has just published an Artist of the Month jazz review of “Philly” Joe Jones for WICN public radio. Doug continues to record a monthly podcast series “Talk About Jazz with Doug Hall”, and his latest broadcast is with guest artist gospel and jazz vocalist, composer and educator, Tammy McCann.

Howard Mandel interviewed percussionist-orchestra leader Adam Rudolph and drummer Hamid Drake, largely about their relationship with Don and Moki Cherry, for an Ars Nova (Philadelphia) project, and reviewed Alex Kautz’s Where We Begin for DownBeat. He also proofed the index and created a bibliography of “Books by Jazz Journalists Association Members, Awards Nominees and Winners” for The Jazz Omnibus: Photos and Writings by Members of the JJA, scheduled for publication Oct. 1 by Cymbal Press. Great book to come!

Lawrence Peryer released an episode of his podcast, Spotlight On, which was recorded live at the Royal Room in Seattle. “Improvisation in Music and Life” features performance and discussion with James Falzone (clarinet), Wayne Horvitz (piano), Ray Larsen (trumpet), Abbey Blackwell (bass), and Rocky Martin (drums), exploring the various artistic and philosophical questions faced by musicians and others when they live and create in the moment.

Natalia Rikker has participated in two international jazz festivals over the past month. At the end of June, she gave a lecture, “Jazz: Forget About stereotypes” at the Jazz over the Yenisei River Festival in Krasnoyarsk. This lecture at the Siberian Federal University took place before the concert by the Igor Butman Quartet. On July 23, as part of the Uralskiy Dixieland jazz ensemble, she performed at the First International St. Petersburg Jazz Festival.

Scott Thompson’s PR clients currently include Latin legend Papo Vazquez’s Mighty Troubadours’ Songs Del Yucayeke, Eric Hollaway’s “thatbassvoice” new release JAZZ-ISH and eclectic multi-cultural guitarist Pascal Bokar’s I Can Tell.  Thompson also is working the new release Tres Das Cores with Gaia Wilmer and Jaques Mrelenbaum from the Brazilian artist’s 8-piece band. They perform at the Kennedy Center September 5 and at Dizzy’s Club September 6-8. The Northeast Tour also play at Berklee and Hunter College.

Michael J. West wrote Album of the Day pieces on SML, Africa Negra, Tomin, and Nicole Mitchell & Ballake Sissoko for Bandcamp. He also wrote a history of the DC Jazz Festival for CapitalBop, and a preview of the festival’s 20th iteration for Washington City Paper.
