New York, NY — Jazz journalists Nat Hentoff and Will Friedwald, Down Beat associate editor Aaron Cohen and biographer/collaborator David Ritz are among the winners of the 43rd Annual ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for print, broadcast and new media coverage of music, as announced on September 28, 2011.

were established in 1967 in memory of Deems Taylor a distinguished composer, critic, commentator and six-year President of ASCAP, who died in 1966. Recipients of 2011 honors will be celebrated at an invitation-only ceremony and reception on at ASCAP’s New York offices on Tuesday, November 15. All recipients are listed below:
Radio Broadcast Awards for outstanding music coverage: to National Public Radio’s “Weekend All Things Considered,” hosted by Guy Raz, produced by Phil Harrell.
Television Broadcast Award, to “Still Bill,” a documentary about singer-songwriter Bill Withers, a Late Night & Weekends production directed by Alex Vlack and Damani Baker, aired on Showtime.
The Nicolas Slonimsky Award for Outstanding Musical Biography in the concert music field, to Professor R. Larry Todd for Fanny Hensel: The Other Mendelssohn (Oxford University Press).
The Timothy White Award for Outstanding Musical Biography in the pop music field: Will Friedwald for A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers (Free Press).
The Béla Bartók Award for Outstanding Ethnomusicology Book to Professor James Loeffner for Most Musical Nation: Jews and Culture in the Late Russian Empire (Yale University Press).
