A who’s who of the jazz world will be on hand Wednesday afternoon June 20 at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City as
the Jazz Journalists Association announces the winners of 2012 JJA Jazz Awards in 40 categories of excellence in jazz music and journalism.
Nominees in 38 categories were chosen by the votes of the Professional Journalist Members of the Jazz Journalists Association. Nominations were made on the basis of work done in calendar year 2011, with the exception of Lifetime Achievement Awards categories, in which nominations are for a lifetime body of work. Members and others were able to submit their own work for nomination in the Best Liner Notes and Photo of the Year categories. Best Shortform Online Video of the Year nominees were selected by a committee of JJA videographers. The full list of Nominees is online at the Awards website, jjajazzawards.org
Gala MCs Josh Jackson, of The Checkout, and Angelika Beener of Alternate Takes will announce the winners, and their names will be live tweeted via @jjajazzawards and viewable here at JJA News and at jjajazzawards.org.
The Awards are also being celebrated at satellite parties in thirteen cities in the U.S., Canada and New Zealand. Each city will honor a local Jazz Hero, “activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz who have had significant impact in their local communities. ” Two Jazz Heroes from New York will be honored at the gala in that city, and writer Albert Murray will receive the Words & Music Award bestowed by the JJA and the Jazz Foundation of America.
