20th annual Jazz Awards, and Jazz Heroes in 25 US cities
2016 JJA Jazz Awards season is underway
The Jazz Journalists Association has begun the process of
selecting winners of its 2016 Jazz Awards for achievements in music and journalism, as well as naming and celebrating 2016 Jazz Heroes honored for “aiding and abetting jazz” in 25 U.S. communities.
The Awards process involves two stages of voting. First, the JJA’s professional members are called upon to make up to three nominations in each of 40 categories of excellence in which they feel well-informed. All nominations are tabulated and those nominees accruing the most members’ mentions advance to become finalists, whose names appear on a second ballot, also voted upon by the JJA’s professional members.
The Awards nominating ballot — to be filled out only by professional members of the JJA — is posted at 2016 NOMINATIONS BALLOT PAGE. Members must be logged into their JJA accounts to access the ballot. If you can’t remember your password, click “Forgot password” and follow the instructions. If you have problems logging in, write firstname.lastname@example.org
Winners of the 20th annual JJA Jazz Awards for musicianship will be announced at JJAJazzAwards.org
, as well as on JJANews.org and the JJA’s Facebook page
in early May, 2016. The honorees will receive their awards from JJA members at public events in locations across the U.S. throughout the summer and fall of 2016; notifications of the presentations will be promoted via the JJA’s Facebook page and Twitter stream. Winners in the Jazz Awards journalism categories will be announced at a JJA Awards party in New York City in June 2016, exact date and place TBA.
The JJA’s Jazz Heroes will be announced on April 1, their photos and bios posted as they were last year
. Jazz Heroes are celebrated with public parties and presentations organized by grassroots supporters in local communities — details of which will be also be posted on April 1. Jazz Heroes can be nominated by any person who is willing to work towards their public celebration if they are chosen for the honor. All nominations for Jazz Heroes remain in active consideration in successive years if the designated person is not selected. Each year’s class of Jazz Heroes is determined by a committee consisting of JJA officers and staff in consultation with jazz support organizations and JJA sponsors.
