Jan 6th, 2015 | By

The JJA was out in force at the third annual Jazz Connect Conference in New York City at St. Peter’s Church (54th and Lexington Avenue) on January 8 and 9, 2015.

JazzConnect_300x600Board member Don Palmer chaired a members’ meeting, open to non-members also, at 5 p.m. Thurs. Jan 8 (registration to the Conference is not required to attend). President Howard Mandel moderated a discussion on “Using ALL Media to Grow New Jazz Audiences” at 9:30 a.m. that day (for which registration is required) with panelists Paul de Barros of the Seattle Times, Gio Russonello of CapitalBop.com and Janis Lane-Ewart, who spoke informatively about a multi-platform campaign she designed and coordinated last September for the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

Members David Adler, Angelika Beener and Tad Hendrickson held a workshop on the “Talking to the Press: How to Interview and Be Interviewed” on Friday at 10 a.m., and the JJA collaborated with the New School Jazz Program to co-host a cocktail reception through the gracious good support of Mail Chimp at (le) Poisson Rouge fro 4  – 5:30 p.m. on Friday prior to Winter JazzFest.

The Jazz Connect conference was produced by the Jazz Forward Coalition. The 2015 conference theme of “Strength Through Community,” surfaced as representatives from a cross-section of the jazz ecosystem presented 12 workshops and 5 plenary sessions, and participated in “Ask the Experts” sessions and many informal meetings.
